BVI Athletics Association officials have selected 25 athletes for the 51st Carifta Games, which opens on Saturday and runs through Monday in Grenada.

A total of 10 athletes met the association’s qualifying standards including a record five high jumpers.

During Saturday’s press conference to introduce the team, association president Steve Augustine said that his executive looked at athletes who were close to the qualifying standards and made a determination among themselves in relation to their development, as to whether the games would be beneficial to their athletic progress.

“Those who were just outside the qualifying standards, that is the basis of those who are sitting here today,” he said. “Getting those athletes to compete with each other based on the fact that World Juniors and meets of that type as meets that the association looks to project to doing very well in, we see the Carifta Games as a development process towards meets such as those.”

Comparing the team to last year’s winners that won two medals in the Bahamas, Augustine said it’s smaller. Jah’Kyla Morton who won U17 Girls High Jump silver in 2023 after bronze in 2022, moved up to the U20 division and there are other hopefuls that are coming along nicely he noted.

“We had a number of fifth place positions last year, those athletes are back again. We did rather well in the relays with some fifth placed positions and a national record was developed as well and we’re out to achieve the same or even greater,” he said. “It’s a smaller team, but in dynamics and in performance, I think we are just as equipped as we were last year, to go to Grenada and do the very same things. We do intend to secure some medal winning performances in Grenada, but we also intend to ensure that the next generation of athletes, they get a chance to get their feet wet, because these are the very same athletes that will return in the Under 17 and Under 20 age categories in years to come.”
